SWAMI NALANDA: "IF THE MAHAVISHNU WORSHIPS GOD SHIVA IN THE FORM OF A SHIVA LINGA WHY CAN'T WE ,MORTALS WORSHIP IDOLS. PEOPLE WHO STAND AGAINST IDOL WORSHIP LACK KNOWLEDGE AND THEIR SPEECHES MUST BE IGNORED    AS    THE     BARKING   OF    A     STRAY DOG "

Swami Vivekananda once went to the Maharaja of Alvar (a state in India) to meet him. This was the pre-independence era where the British had given powers to the Maharaja, and hence he had become a powerful king.
While talking about religion and faith, the Maharaja and his minister expressed doubts about idol worship. In short, they looked down upon it and made some cutting remarks about the same.
Addressing the minister, Swami Vivekananda said, “Take this picture of your King, the Maharaja of Alvar, and spit on it. Can you do it?
There was pin drop silence in the room. Nobody was sure how to react.
Then Swamiji said, “Even though he is standing next to you, you have the 'emotion' that Maharaja is there in the picture, hence you cannot spit on it. Similarly, when a Hindu worships an idol, he doesn't say, 'O stone, I am worshipping you.' He has the 'emotion' that God resides in that idol.
The Maharaja was satisfied with the reply and profusely thanked Swami Vivekananda.

...OMG ( FILM) IS AGAINST IDOL WORSHIP...

 NEWS
Bollywood director Umesh Shukla’s latest film OMG Oh My God released worldwide . With a cast boasting the loveable Akshay Kumar and the eternally hilarious Paresh Rawal, the movie has made it to our must-watch list this weekend. It even has an item song featuring the voluptuous Sonakshi Sinha and choreographer Prabhu Deva to draw in the crowds.
According to a movie review published in the Times of India (TOI), OMG ( Oh My God) is a must watch, as it is a film that “not only entertains and inspires but also enlightens.” The story revolves around the character Kanjibhai (Paresh Rawal), who plays an atheist that makes a living out of selling idols. When his shop is destroyed after an earthquake, he cannot file a successful insurance claim, since the insurance company says an act of God is not covered in their policy. Reviewers say it is gutsy for a matinee idol like Akshay Kumar (also the film’s producer) to make a statement against idol worship. Rawal has also been given rave reviews for his role.
Unfortunately…

The film has been banned in the UAE! Trade analyst Amod Mehra told TOI that “not a single Hindi film which depicts caste or religion in any way has ever released in UAE.” The decision has been quite a blow to the film-makers, who have lost out on a whopping INR4 crore.

"I Believe in Goodness to Humanity Not Idol Worship" - ---------Paresh Rawal

“ During the Satya Yuga, meditation was the way to attain self-knowledge. During Treta Yuga, it was attained by penance, during Dwapar Yuga it was attained by performing 'Yagya' while in the present era of Kali Yuga, idol worship is considered to be the means to achieve self-realization. Invirtuosity invites sorrow while virtuosity bestows joy and happiness”.

WORSHIPING THE IDOL OF SHIVA

It has been mentioned in the sixteenth chapter of Viddyeshwar Samhita that all the desires of a man are completely fulfilled, if he worship even in earthen idol of Shiva. For making an idol of Shiva, clay should be acquired from the base of river, pond, well or any such other place. In this clay fragrant powder and milk should be added to make it into a paste. After the constructing of idol is complete, it should be worshipped by all the sixteen types of rituals Shodasopachar.

If such an idol is worshiped for one thousand times, then it helps a devotee in attaining to the Satyaloka. Performing 'abhishek' of such an idol helps in self-purification, offering fragrance gives virtues, Naivedya increases the life span and worshipping it with 'Dhoop' gives wealth and prosperity respectively.

Worshipping the idol with a burning lamp gives knowledge to the devotee, whereas offering beetel leaves gives splendours.
A devotee who worships Lord Shiva in the Hindu month of Magh and on Krishna Chaturdashi achieves longevity of life. Both, worldly pleasures and salvation are achieved by worshipping Shiva.

"After getting liberated from his sin, Lord Brahma worshiped the idol of four-headed Mahadeva and established another Shivalinga in the middle of a nearby lake. He also created a reservoir, which is named after him- Brahmasar. He established two other Shivalingas- one towards the east of his hermitage and another at the bank of river Saraswati. A devotee who goes on a pilgrimage to these sacred places created by Lord Brahma becomes liberated from all his sins and attains salvation." - Brahma Purana

Describing the origin of 'Kapila Varaha' (an idol of lord Varaha made by sage Kapila) lord Varaha told Prithvi- "Sage Kapila was a great devotee of mine. He had made my idol and worshipped it regularly. Later on, Indra acquired it and started worshipping it. The demon king Ravana took it to Lanka after defeating Indra in a battle. In Treta Yuga I (Sri Rama) defeated him and made Vibhishan, his brother the king of Lanka. This way, the idol came under the possession of Vibhishan but he agreed to part with it at my request. This was how I brought that idol to Ayodhya. After reaching Ayodhya, I presented it to Shatrughan as a reward for killing Lavanasur. Later on, while Shatrughan was going to Mathura he carried that idol along with him." - Vishnu Purana

God Shiva was worshiped by Lord  Rama ( Avatar of Mahavishnu ) at this shrine as in Rameswaram.  The white marble Shivalingam worshiped in the sanctum is referred to as Ramalingeswara Swami as well as Ksheera Rameshwara Swamy.

Suchindrum

Suchindrum is the place where king of heavens Devraj Indra attained ‘Suchi’ i.e.,
purification. According to Sthalapurana... Indra taken over by the beauty of Ahalya
andhad cast amorous glances towards her. Ahalya was the wife of sage Gowthama.

The fierce Gowthama then cursed Indra. Humiliated Indra sought immediate redemption
to the curse. He came to ‘Gnana Aranya’ (as the place was called then) and started
worshipping GOD Shiva in the form of Shivlinga.
Mahadev pleased with Indra’s devotion relieved him of his
curse and granted his wish that this place would henceforth be called as
Suchindrum. ( The place were Lord Indra got purified )

IDOL WORSHIP IN OTHER RELIGIONS

There is no reference to worship of idols in the Vedas. The Puranas and the Agamas give descriptions of idol-worship both in the houses and in the temples. Idol-worship is not peculiar to Hinduism. Christians worship the Cross. They have the image of the Cross in their mind. The Mohammedans keep the image of Kaaba stone when they kneel and do prayers. The people of the whole world, save a few Yogis and Vedantins, are all worshippers of idols. They keep some image or the other in the mind.
The mental image also is a form of idol. The difference is not one of kind, but only one of degree. All worshipers, however intellectual they may be, generate a form in the mind and make the mind dwell on that image.
