CONVERSATION   WITH
SWAMI   NALANDA

(OMEGLE  : under the interest “GOD”)

Ajay Mohan, Tamil Nadu
- Sir, Islam teaches that Image or idol praying is forbidden…if u say that GOD is one then, WHY do hindus pray to images and Idols.

Swami :

Ajay, many ask me this question now days. Islam prays to the GOD who is formless, bodiless, with no partiality, merciful and innocent…ALLAH, who is their supreme God.  According to Hindus, Brahman, the supreme soul  is eternally free, pure, innocent , independent, self born…which shows that both are same.
>>>Nityamukta nirvikara nishprapancha nirashraya
     Nityashuddha nityabuddha niravadya nirantara
.      …. (45)
---SREE LALITHA SAHASRANAMA STOTRAM

Nityamukta: Who is eternally free.
Nirvikara: Who is not subject to change.
Nishprapancha: Who is beyond the sphere of multiplicity.
Nirashraya: Who is not dependent on anything or anyone.
Nityashuddha: Who is eternally pure.
Nityabuddha: Who is the ever – awake Consciousness.
Niravadya: Who is flawless.
Nirantara: Who is without any division, being eternal by nature.

TO YOUR QUESTION>>> We hindus, worship many Devas (Devatas) or deities NOT “Gods”. We have just one GOD, Brahman whose male form is

                                          GOD MAHADEV

and female form is GODDESS SHAKTHI

We worship different aspects of the same GOD. Brahman (Supreme soul) took forms on earth so that GOD will be able to control and guide mankind. Mahadev and Mahadevi ( Shakthi) created Mahavishnu and from Mahavishnu, Brahmadev...the CREATOR was born.

A lotus grows from Mahavishnu's navel

Inside the Lotus, Brahmadev was born
We pray to the Idols and images of those forms or avatars. The idol or images helps ordinary humans to concentrate and pray. For example when we were small kids, when our mom asks us to study…we used to play around in her absence and study her presents. That is we can concentrate better when we have someone to guide us. The Idols of Deities give humans such an ability to concentrate. Just like that, ordinary humans are not usually able to concentrate his prays as he has many tension like household tensions, job concerned etc.

Praying without an image is meditation, which the yogis and other great saints practice, they meditate for hours. Meditation becomes a success only when our minds are free from disturbances. Christians use a cross or a cross with Holy son of God, Jesus Christ to concentrate and pray.

>>>Secondly, humans understand things better when they see it in 3 Dimensional views, our eyes and brains are used to 3 D visions. Worshipping a source of power or energy like Brahman is difficult for ordinary men.

When a Muslim thinks of Allah, nothing comes to his mind but when a Hindu or Christian thinks of his or her God they will see their Deities who are representations of GOD.
“Na jaanaami punyam na jaanaami teertham
Na jaanaami muktim layam vaa kadaachit
Na jaanaami bhaktim vratam vaapi maataha
Gatistvam gatistvam tvamekaa Bhavaani”

Translation: I do not know what are good deeds or what are Holy places. I do not know what is liberation or meditation (on the Supreme Lord); I do know what is devotion or what is religious observance.
Oh, Bhavaani! You are the only One Recourse.”

An ordinary mortal is just like a kid to God, He loves and respects his parents as they are his protectors, he do not know his ancestors. He just knows who he has in front of his very eyes.

>>>Thirdly, WHY HINDUS CONSIDER PHOTOS AND IDOLS OF GODS AS SACRED AND HOLY….

I will tell about that with an example…Consider that your father’s photo is hanging in the wall. I know that you respect and love your father…I asks you to throw it and stamp on it…WILL U DO IT?

NO…NO ,son born to a good father shall can do it. BUT WHY??? The photo is just a photograph made with ink on paper. Why should you love it…the same is with photo or an idol of GOD.

>>>It’s not about the material the idol is made of…When we pray to GOD in a TEMPLE we do not look if the idol is made of gold , silver or rock…we pray to the god in it and not the material. HOPE YOUR QUESTION IS ANSWERED

Ajay: thank you, swamiji
