TRIPURA  THE  3
INDESTRUCTABLE
                                          CITIES
Tarakasur  was a powerful asura and the son of Vajranaka in Hindu belief. Tarakasur repeatedly defeated the gods until heaven was on the verge of collapse. Yet he had a clever boon that he could be defeated only by the son of Rudra, who was a complete yogi, given to severe austerities, far from any thoughts of marriage. Eventually,Kamadeva, the god of love, was sent in advance and created an untimely spring around Rudra and broke his dhyana with arrow of lust. On awakening, Rudra's fiery gaze burnt Kamdeva to ashes, and the disembodied spirit of love was disseminated across the universe. However, Parvati who was re-incarnation of Sati, Rudra's first wife and also incarnation of Aadi Shakti .

Goddess Parvati was married to God Rudra.
Eventually their son Kartikeya was born.
Kartikeya, God Of War (Son of God Shiva)

Kartikeya killed Tarakasur( Demon King ).
Following the death of Tarakasura, who was killed by Kartikeya, his sons Tarakaksha, Vidyunmali and Kamalaksha (THE THREE DEMONS IN ONE FORM IS CALLED TRIPURASURA) undertook severe penances by which they pleased Lord Brahma. They requested that they be blessed with impregnable fortresses, which would be everlasting. However, as Brahma told them that nothing could be everlasting, they requested that the destruction of the cities could be brought about by a single arrow only, on the hope that it was impossible for anyone to shoot such an arrow. Brahma then blessed them that such fortresses would be constructed by the asura architect,Mayan.

The construction of the three cities.
The three cities which comprised Tripura were distributed thus:

·         The lowest, with walls of Iron, located on earth,·         The second, with walls of silver, located in the sky, and·         The third, with walls of gold, located in heaven.

The three cities were mobile and moved in such a way that they would never be in a single line, save for a few moments in around a thousand years, when the nakshatra Pushya would be in conjunction with the moon.

"One of these forts was constructed in the sky, the other was constructed on the earth and the third was constructed in the nether world." - Shiv purana

They were thus reassured that they were quite safe, as it would be an extremely difficult task to destroy the three cities, which aligned only momentarily, by a single arrow!
Asuras from everywhere began to flock to Tripura to live. The cities were extremely luxurious and prosperous.

The Cities moved in Random motion like electrons and they would never be in a single line

Forebodings of the fall of Tripura

After several years of joy, the inherent evil tendencies of the Asuras surfaced once again and they began to oppress the good and torment the noble. In the meantime, Mayasura was engaged in the worship of Shiva. The rest of the demons attacked sages and the Devas and shattered the peace of the worlds. Finally, when Indra and the rest of the Devas despondently approached Lord Brahma for respite, Lord Brahma redirected them to Shiva and also informed them of the vulnerability of Tripura to a single arrow. Lord Shiva promised to help them and the Devas returned to combat the Asuras in a mighty war. They were also assisted by Nandi, the leader of Lord Shiva's Ganas. Even though Vidyunmali was slain by Nandi, and several other Asuras were killed in the war, they were revived by water in the pool of Tripura, which had magical powers.

The three Asuras were great devotees of Shiv and offered worship to the Shiv Linga and as a result they could never be harmed but later they forgot their worship and proclaimed themselves as GODS

The Destruction of Tripura

The Devas requested Rudra to eliminate those three demons. Lord Rudra instructed them to go to lord Vishnu and said-

"The Tripurasurs are very virtuous so they could not be killed. You all must go to lord Vishnu and try to seek his help."

The deities then went to lord Vishnu and made the same request. Lord Vishnu performed an oblation. Thousands of armed spirit appeared from the yagya-kunda. Lord Vishnu sent these spirits to kill the three demon-brothers. But these spirits were no match for the Tripurasurs might and they had to run for their lives. They came to lord Vishnu and narrated the whole story. Lord Vishnu became very worried. He sent back all the deities and started thinking about the means, Tripurasurs could be killed.

Lord Vishnu came to the conclusion that the Tripurasurs could not be killed till they remain Virtuous and religious. He then created an illusionary entity from his body who had no hairs on his head. He had worn dirty clothes and a bag was hanging down his shoulder. He also had a broom in his head.

The entity asked lord Vishnu about the purpose of his existence and his name. Lord Vishnu told him that his name was Arihan. He also instructed him to create a scripture which stresses upon the importance of action (Karmavad) and which is different from the rituals explained in the Vedas. Lord Vishnu specifically instructed him to keep the language of that scripture as simple and degenerated as possible.

Lord Vishnu then preached Arihan on the science of illusion which stressed that the heaven or the hell does not exist anywhere else, but on this earth itself. Lord Vishnu instructed Arihan to get Tripurasurs initiated into with this philosophy so that the demon-brothers become irreligious. Vishnu ordered Arihan to make his residence in a desert with his disciples.

"You should propagate your philosophy when Kali Yuga arrives" - said Lord Vishnu.

After giving his instruction lord Vishnu disappeared. Arihan then created four illusionary entities from his bein who were supposed to act as his followers. Their names were Rishi, Yati, Keerya and Upadhyay.
Now the time had arrived to enter the forts of Tripurasurs. All of them entered the forts and in a gradual manner started increasing their influence. As a result the Tripurasurs became irreligious. Not only that, their subjects too became irreligious in a very short time.

When the deities saw that the Tripurasurs had become irreligious completely, they went to lord Rudra and requested him to kill Tripurasurs. Right then mother Parvati arrived there accompanied by Kartik and Ganesha. She requested Rudra to come along with her into the palace. All the deities followed them and kept on requesting. The deities were angry that Parvati had caused obstacles in the fulfillment of their objective. They could not conceal their anger and expressed it.

One of the ganas of Shiva, whose name was Kumbhodar angrily attacked the deities. All of them got injured and went to lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu advised them to chant the five lettered mantra - OM NAMAH SHIVAY for one crore times. The deities followed the instruction. Lord Rudra became pleased and appeared before them. He assured the deities that their wishes would be fulfilled.

As the furious war continued between the Asuras and the Devas, even the Earth began to slip from its place. Just as Brahma and Shiva were worrying about the Earth's descent, the Protector god Mahavishnu, in the form of a massive boar then entered Tripura and drank dry, the pool of magic water that rejuvenated the dead Asuras.

As the war raged on, Devas continued to struggle to match the Asuras, who used their magical powers to great effect in the war. One day the three cities aligned. Rudra welded  a chariot  from which he would battle the three demons.

He welded the cosmic arrow, Pasupatastra
Brahma became the charioteer.
He used Sumeru Mountain, the cone shaped Mount were devas live as his BOW.
Vasuki, the Snake King as his string.

God Rudra, incarnated as Pashupati, who destroyed the three cities using his mighty arrow.PashupatiNath is the most important of all Shiva temples located in Kathmandu, Nepal. Pashupatastra is the weapon of PashupatiNath.(an aspect of GOD SHIVA)

Mahapāśupatāstra in Hindu History, is an irresistible and most destructive personal weapon of God Shiva, discharged by the mind, the eyes, words, or a bow. Never to be used against lesser enemies or by lesser warriors, the Pashupatastra is capable of destroying creation and vanquishing all beings.

Lord Rudra immediately regretted his act, since he had forgotten to protect Mayan, a great devotee of his.
Mayan

Realising this,  Nandi raced ahead of the arrow and informed Mayan of the impending doom.

God Shiva on Nandi

Instantly, Maya fled Tripura, leaving behind the great city he had constructed, which was immediately reduced to ashes, along with its inhabitants, the Asuras, by the great arrow of Rudra. This destruction of Tripura, led to the appellation Tripurantaka (त्रिपुरान्तक)

"Shiva can take the power of anyone/anything because it is his power that is already existing in first place.
Even though the boon granted was "one-arrow-one-shot and cities should be destroyed", Shiva has the ultimate power to rule them over.
God Shiva could simply destroy/create anything even without moving his eyes.

The "smile and burn" act of Shiva in Tamil is beautifully called as "sirithu purameritha peruman" (God who laughed and burned the three purams)"

Tripurasurs prayed to lord Shiva to have mercy on them. Lord Shiva assured them that after their death they would be born as his ganas. At last Tripurasurs were burnt to death. Maya was the only demon who survived. After their death the Tripurasurs were privileged to be reborn as the ganas of Shiva.
